PORT ST. LUCIE Chris Lindstrom Jersey , Fla. (AP) — Before picking football over baseball, Kyler Murray got some advice from another famous two-sport star. One Heisman Trophy winner to another.Tim Tebow says he told Murray to follow his heart when deciding between the Oakland Athletics and pursuing an NFL career. Murray, who won the Heisman last year in his lone season as Oklahoma’s starting quarterback, announced Monday he was fully committing to the gridiron despite being selected ninth overall in the 2018 amateur baseball draft. After arriving Saturday at the New York Mets’ spring training camp, Tebow said he interviewed Murray a few months ago in his job as a college football television analyst and the two have gotten to know each other.Tebow, a former NFL quarterback, won the 2007 Heisman Trophy at Florida.“Kyler, I think he’s a really good young man, and I think this was a really tough decision for him,” Tebow said. “He loves two sports and I can really relate to that. And he went with something that he’s been really good at lately and dominating in. When we talked about it, and we did talk about that, I just gave him the advice to follow your heart. Whatever you’re passionate about.”Tebow, now an outfielder in the Mets’ farm system http://www.falconsauthorizedshops.com/authentic-kaleb-mcgary-jersey , has made impressive strides as a baseball player since his NFL career with the Denver Broncos and New York Jets from 2010-12 ended. To the surprise of many, he became an All-Star at Double-A last season and is ticketed for Triple-A Syracuse in April to begin his third full season of professional baseball. After the baseball draft last year, Murray agreed to a minor league contract with Oakland for a $4.66 million signing bonus. The deal called for him to receive $1.5 million after approval last summer by Major League Baseball and $3.16 million on March 1. He must return six-sevenths of the money he received, or $1,285,714.“You know what? Don’t do it for your agents, or your friends and sometimes necessarily even your family,” Tebow recalled telling Murray. “Do it for what’s on your heart, and don’t let other people define you. You’re going to have all these coaches that you look up to and everybody else that’s going to tell you what they think, but what’s most important is following your heart and your passion. And so, I don’t know, hopefully he did that.”Murray hopes to be a high pick in the NFL draft, which begins April 25 Kendall Sheffield Jersey , and he could be. He is not a prototypical NFL quarterback, perhaps generously listed at 5-foot-10 and 195 pounds, but his combination of speed, passing skills and scrambling ability make him an intriguing prospect. COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) — Philip Rivers and the Los Angeles Chargers have already played in most of the toughest road environments in the NFL this season. So a trip to New England for Sunday’s AFC divisional-round game isn’t anything out of the ordinary.Considering how well the Chargers have played away from home, it may end up being an advantage. Los Angeles is 8-1 on the road, but its only loss came in Week 3, when it took the bus to the LA Memorial Coliseum and lost to the Rams.“We’ve found a way. We’ve won in a lot of different ways on the road this year — in some tough environments,” Rivers said. “We’ve won with big defensive stops and a couple of two-minute end-of-game drives. Kind of all different ways.”They join the 1984 and ’89 San Francisco 49ers as the only West squads to win five regular-season and/or postseason games going East or farther.Only 16 times since the merger has a team from the west won four or more games coming East or over the Atlantic. The 2013 49ers were the previous team to do it, going 4-0 which included a game in London.Coach Anthony Lynn credited the team’s road routine, which includes traveling on Friday afternoon for long road trips, and having a young team has helped galvanize them.“I hope that shows we are an extraordinary team,” offensive tackle Russell Okung said. “I think anytime you beat a team on the road it proves a lot about one’s execution. Going in tough http://www.falconsauthorizedshops.com/authentic-john-cominsky-jersey , hostile environments only adds to our confidence.”The Chargers’ 23-17 win last week against Baltimore in the AFC wild-card round was their best road game this season as they sacked Lamar Jackson seven times and held him to 26 passing yards in the first three quarters. Rivers threw for 160 yards and completed passes to nine players. The road resume also includes rallying from 16 points down to beat Pittsburgh on Dec. 2, which ended the Steelers’ 175-game unbeaten streak with at least a 16-point lead at home and marked the largest blown lead at home in franchise history. The road success also included a 29-28 victory at Kansas City on Dec. 13 where the Chargers trailed by two touchdowns midway through the fourth quarter and a 25-17 victory over Seattle on Nov. 4 where they needed a pass deflection in the end zone on the final play.“Our guys are hardened to a certain degree about playing in tough spots. Being down, being able to come back and win those games, that can help, I guess, as much as anything to prepare you for it,” offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt said. While the Chargers have thrived in hostile environments, Sunday’s game against the Patriots might be their biggest challenge yet.New England has won eight straight playoff home games, which is tied for the fourth-longest streak in NFL history. The Patriots have also won seven straight home games in the divisional round.“We do special things on the road. That’s a fact, not an opinion,” defensive tackle Damion Square said. “Tom (Brady) has been able to do a lot of really good things in his career but history doesn’t win games. Sunday is about proving we have enough. You rely on the guys you have with you and rely on your fundamentals.”Lynn does have experience beating the Patriots in the playoffs. He was the Jets’ running backs coach when they defeated New England 28-21 eight years ago in the divisional round. While many have focused on the Patriots’ mystique, Lynn said he is keeping his team concentrating on what they need to do to win.“We definitely can’t make mistakes. That team cannot beat themselves and I respect that about their organization. That’s a skill and an advantage they’ve had for a long time,” he said.Even though the Chargers have had three cold-weather games since Dec. 1 Qadree Ollison Jersey , they have lucked out in that it hasn’t been frigid or snowing. Sunday’s forecast does have a chance of snow, which is the one thing they can’t simulate.“In California you can’t prepare for that. You know, 29, 30 (degrees) whatever it’s supposed to be, to me, that’s good football weather. So it might be cold, breezy, but we’ll be fine,” Lynn said.

MIAMI (AP) — The Miami Dolphins have begun their search for a coach who’s ready to lose this year.New England Patriots linebackers coach Brian Flores and Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy Andy Isabella Jersey , the first candidates to interview for the Dolphins’ job, met with them Friday. Owner Stephen Ross is seeking a replacement for Adam Gase , and wants to rebuild after a 7-9 season. The Dolphins are also expected to interview their special teams coach, Darren Rizzi; Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio; Dallas Cowboys secondary coach Kris Richard; and former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Munchak, now the Pittsburgh Steelers’ offensive line coach.Gase, fired Monday after three seasons Jamel Dean Jersey , led the Dolphins to the playoffs in his first year. That isn’t likely to happen with the new coach.Miami has finished with six to eight wins in nine of the past 10 years, and hasn’t won a playoff game since 2000. As a result, the 78-year-old Ross said, his win-now approach will change.“I would hope I don’t have to go 3-13,” Ross said this week. “But whatever it’s going to take, we’re going to build the organization with the right players.”The roster revamp is expected to include the departure of quarterback Ryan Tannehill D.K. Metcalf Jersey , who has been with the team since 2012.Miami’s search is being led by general manager Chris Grier, who has been with the team for 19 years and took charge of football operations in this week’s organizational shake-up. Grier said he embraces Ross’ desire to take a long view in building the team.“It’s not about winning one year and then falling back,” Grier said. “We want to build this thing the right way, where it’s long sustained success where the fans are happy, Steve is happy and we’re winning for long periods of time.”Grier has said the Dolphins will investigate every avenue in pursuing a coach, and neither NFL experience nor head-coaching experience is a necessity. The next coach Nick Bosa Jersey , who will report to Grier, will be Miami’s 10th since 2004, including three interim coaches.Bieniemy is in his sixth season with the Chiefs and his first as offensive coordinator. This season they led the NFL in points and yards. He also interviewed this week for the New York Jets’ head coaching job.Flores has been a Patriots assistant for 11 seasons and took over defensive play-calling a year ago after the departure of defensive coordinator Matt Patricia. Flores is also expected to interview for head coaching jobs with the Cleveland Browns and Denver Broncos. In my last article we ranked the 15 best wide receivers in the league at the moment. Now let's switch our focus to the guys who get the receivers the ball. The big-money position, quarterback.Typically being the face of the franchise, qarterbacks get all the glory and all the blame for thier teams' successes and failures. The camera is trained on them for most of the game, which can be frustrating when trying to watch what is going on in coverage down field.A good quarterback can propel a franchise to greatness http://www.cardinalscheapstore.com/byron-murphy-jersey-cheap , but football is by no means an individual sport. Every aspect of the game must be crisp and coordinated, with plans of attack developed weeks ahead of time to counter opponents' strengths and capitalize on their weaknesess.Football is the "American sport," and that's probably because we modelled it after our next-favorite past time; war. George Carlin summed it up best in his classic "Baseball vs. Football" monologue:"In Football, the object is for the quarterback, otherwise known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault; riddling the defense by hitting his receivers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz Dre'Mont Jones Jersey , even if he has to use the shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing his aerial assault with a sustained ground attack, which punches holes in the forward wall of the enemies’ defensive line."Keep that in mind next time you're watching the NFL.

The NFL is the most popular sports league in the USA. It is currently comprised of 32 teams http://www.tennesseetitansteamonline.com/amani-hooker-jersey , with 16 teams in each conference; the AFC and NFC respectively. Each team has a unique and rich history, with some franchises winning multiple championships, and others never ever making it to the biggest game of the year. Even for the teams that have been starved for a championship during their history, they’ve experienced magical moments, amazing players, and a great story. Fans have a special place in their hearts for their favorite franchise’s best team of all time. These squads made a mark on the NFL in some way Taylor Rapp Jersey , and left their fans with lifelong memories. This article is an attempt to pay homage to each franchise's’ best team. This list will only be examining the last 50 years, also referred to as the Super Bowl era. My apologies to the legendary Cleveland Browns teams that existed back in the 40s, but a cutoff was needed. There is also a need to take some stats with a grain of salt due to how much football has evolved since the first Super Bowl half a century ago. it'd be unfair to consider how much some teams throw and score in the current era, so this list won’t just look at which team scored the most points in franchise history. Instead, you’ll see point differential mentioned often, which is how many more points a team scored compared to how many points they had scored against them. It’s not a perfect stat Shareef Miller Jersey , but it helps illustrate how dominant a team really was that season. It’s also important to note that while the Super Bowl counts for a lot, it isn’t the end all, be all. Football is a fickle sport and the variance of the sport is only compounded because it uses a one-game playoff system, which means a few bad bounces can ruin a team’s championship aspirations. Without further ado, please enjoy every current NFL franchise's best team they’ve ever had. ATLANTA (AP) — Eagles defensive lineman Chris Long has won the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year for his outstanding community service.Long, the son of Hall of Famer Howie Long Germaine Pratt Jersey , founded the Chris Long Foundation in 2015, and tasked it with four missions: clean water, military appreciation, combating homelessness and serving young people. Then, last season, Long donated his entire salary to support education in cities where he has played — St. Louis http://www.bengalsauthorizedshops.com/authentic-ryan-finley-jersey , Boston and Philadelphia.Earlier this year, Long climbed Mount Kilimanjaro with other NFL players and some U.S. military veterans to raise money to build clean water wells for East Africa.“Yeah, it’s a tremendous honor,” Long said. “It’s not why we do the work we do off the field. I think the other 31 nominees are remarkable men. I had the privilege of hanging out with them all week and a lot of them already know I learned (about) a lot of their causes and I’m excited to see if there’s synergy as a brotherhood in different causes that we are involved in.“I don’t know, I’m very humbled. It’s hard to feel deserving with those guys on stage and, obviously Renell Wren Jersey , this guy right here on the statue. It’s a very heavy statue and it makes sense because his legacy is immense. I’m just honored.”

RENTON Benny Snell Jr. Jersey , Wash. (AP) — Shaquem Griffin is thankful for a relatively normal offseason, even if it included a position change. After a year during which he was in the spotlight for first being drafted and then making the Seattle Seahawks roster despite having lost his left hand as a child, the second-year linebacker enjoyed the lack of attention this year.“I didn’t have to worry about the extra everybody trying to hype your head up and get you big-headed, and stuff like that, and everybody telling you what you can and cannot do,” Griffin said Thursday as the Seahawks wrapped up their mandatory minicamp. “More so for me was to take time for yourself, find out who you are, find out what you want to do, find out what your goals are, and what you want to get out of the next season and go after it.”Griffin will begin his second training camp next month in a different position and feeling more comfortable when he’s on the field. Griffin has moved from weak side linebacker to the strong side, where he will play closer to the line of scrimmage. Griffin’s ability to be disruptive there won’t be known until the preseason rolls around and Seattle can gauge his effectiveness as an undersized rusher off the edge. But Griffin is all for the move because it’s a return to what made him successful in college.“You can see him on the edge, in space and coming off the edge and pressures and stuff like that, that it’s a good spot for him,” coach Pete Carroll said.Griffin started the first game of his rookie season due to need Zach Gentry Jersey , but he had mixed success in his first season as a professional. He was a regular contributor and a standout on special teams, but after that opener in Denver played sparingly. He had just 11 tackles as a linebacker and only four in the final 12 games.Seattle struggled to find a way for Griffin to make an impact, which led to the offseason change. Rather than playing off the line of scrimmage, Griffin will be on the edge, allowed to play in space, and will both rush the passer and drop into coverage. It’s a return to what he did at Central Florida when he was one of the most disruptive players in college football.“It’s the exact same thing. I’m rushing, I’m dropping, I’m going man-to-man coverage, I’m setting the edge. I have so much time,” Griffin said. “I remember so much from college on how I need to set the edge and what’s best for me and how I need to use it that it just snapped right back as soon as they put me there. I’m having so much fun again. It’s just such a big difference because I feel so comfortable.”One question will be whether Griffin can play on the line of scrimmage at his weight. His goal is to come into training camp at around 230 pounds. He and his twin brother, Shaquill, hired a personal chef in the offseason. Shaquem wanted to put on good weight, while Shaquill was trying to slim down.Shaquem acknowledges it was his brother’s idea.“I’m just like, ‘I agree with you. Whatever we need to do Nick Bosa Jersey ,'” Shaquem said. “It helps so much.” TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Cam Newton and Jameis Winston know there’s no surefire way for a quarterback to lead a team out of a funk. What works in one situation may not necessarily be the answer in another.Newton’s second-place Carolina Panthers (6-5) have lost three straight games following a 6-2 start, moving closer to the bottom of the NFC South than the top.Winston’s getting another chance to lead the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-7) out of the division cellar after spending a month on the bench because of his propensity for making costly mistakes.“In the NFL, part of winning is not losing, not beating yourself,” Bucs coach Dirk Koetter said, reflecting on Winston delivering his best performance of the season to help Tampa Bay stop a four-game skid last week.“You have to just keep it simple,” said Winston, who lost his starting job after turning the ball over 11 times in 14 quarters. The fourth-year pro said the difference during last week’s 27-9 rout of San Francisco was his decisiveness with the football.“I’m thinking about one play at a time, one completion at a time, one game at a time,” Winston said. “It’s easier to keep it simple when you’re decisive, making quick decisions and getting the ball out of your hands.”The Panthers haven’t won since beating the Bucs 42-28 at home on Nov. 4. Kicking woes factored in narrow losses the past two weeks to Detroit and Seattle, however L.J. Collier Jersey , and Newton said he’s focused on the next opportunity to get back on track.Win or lose, he has learned you give yourself 24 hours to get over the excitement or disappointment.“You can either celebrate or sulk and sob,” the Carolina quarterback said. “After that 24 hours is up, let it go. That has been so helpful for me in my growth as a man.”For Winston, Sunday’s game against the Panthers represents the next test in what amounts to an audition to determine if he’s Tampa Bay’s quarterback of the future. The 24-year-old didn’t face the Panthers last time. He was benched after throwing four interceptions the previous week at Cincinnati. Some things to watch when the NFC South rivals meet:NEWTON LIKES WHERE HE’S ATNewton said this week he’s playing the best football of his career, despite a three-game losing streak.Newton has thrown at least two TD passes in 10 straight games and seems to be thriving in Norv Turner’s offensive scheme.“I’m just feeling in control,” Newton said. “There are no question marks. My assuredness of every single play I know exactly what I’m supposed to do.”McCAFFREY ON THE RUNChristian McCaffrey last week became the first Panthers running back to eclipse 100 yards rushing and 100 yards receiving in the same game. His 237 yards from scrimmage against the Seahawks were the most in franchise history.McCaffrey had 157 yards from scrimmage and two TDs rushing in the last meeting with the Bucs.Newton joked that you shouldn’t call the 5-foot-10, 205-pound McCaffrey “small,” because he hates being labeled a small back.“C-Mac has defied all odds,” Newton said. “With C-Mac, he has always been a workhorse. He’s always been a playmaker. There’s no denying that. My thing is when you draft a person, is he comfortable with the game on the line?”WHERE ARE THE TURNOVERSCarolina’s defense has thrived on takeaways over the years, but they have been struggling in that area of late. The Panthers haven’t forced a turnover in the three games since they last played the Buccaneers. In that game they intercepted Ryan Fitzpatrick twice.EVANS VS. BRADBERRYIn the last meeting, Carolina cornerback James Bradberry put the clamps on Bucs receiver Mike Evans Marquise Blair Jersey , holding Tampa Bay’s top receiver to one catch for 16 yards on 10 targets in a 42-28 victory at home. However, Bradberry has struggled in three games since giving up big plays in each of those games in losses to Pittsburgh, Detroit and Seattle.Bradberry is expected to draw Evans again.“They game-planned really well,” Evans said. “Even though they’re a one-high team, it felt like Eric Reid was just coming to me no matter what. And then Bradberry was underneath just pressing. So, I’ve got to be better, more physical, faster and stronger, and I think I will be this time around.”

Provo, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Kyle Wiltjer scored 24 points to help No. 8 Gonzaga make a second-half comeback for an 87-80 win over Brigham Young in a West Coast Conference opener on Saturday. Kevin Pangos added 21 points on 5-of-8 shooting from 3-point range and also dished out seven assists for the Bulldogs (12-1, 1-0 WCC). Gonzaga received 15 points and 10 rebounds from Byron Wesley. Gonzaga trailed by six a few minutes into the second half, but the Bulldogs were able to come from behind by limiting BYU to 32.1 percent shooting in the second half, including 2-of-13 from long distance. The Cougars (10-4, 0-1) got 13 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds from Kyle Collinsworth for his second triple-double of the season, but it was not enough. Tyler Haws and Anson Winder led BYU with 17 points each. BYU made just three of its first 15 attempts from the floor as Gonzaga jumped out to a 16-point lead. From there, the Cougars made six straight shots to cut the Bulldogs lead to 35-31 with 4:18 left in the half. At the buzzer, Collinsworth hit a long 3-pointer to tie the game at 43 going into the break. The Bulldogs could not get a stop over the final nine minutes and the Cougars made 11 of their last 15 shots to close the half. Out of the break, Brigham Young took its first lead of the game on three consecutive Hawes free throws to open the half. The Cougars led by as much as six after a 6-0 spurt, but their shooting struggles returned. While BYU missed its first nine attempts from long distance in the second half, Gonzaga made four in a three minute span to retake the lead with 12 minutes remaining. Frank Bartley IV responded by hitting three straight free throws, but Gonzaga took the lead for good after two straight baskets from Wiltjer. The Cougars forced one more tie at 67 before Wiltjer and Pangos scored eight straight points for the Bulldogs to get some breathing room. Skyler Halford finally ended Brigham Youngs 3-point drought with six minutes to go, and he hit another less than a minute later to pull the Cougars within four. BYU only made one more shot from the floor after that, and Gonzaga made its free throws to hold onto the lead. Game Notes Gonzaga was picked first in the preseason WCC poll, and BYU was picked second ... Gonzaga has won 19 conference openers in a row ... Pangos moved into the top-10 on Gonzagas all-time scoring list ... Both teams will take the floor again Monday with Gonzaga traveling to San Diego and BYU hosting Portland. James McClean is one of those guys who always seems to be just arriving somewhere. He came to the Premier League relatively late. He was 22 when we signed him at Sunderland from Derry City. We bought a long shot and he gave us fireworks. Bang! Suddenly he had arrived into the reserve team. Bang! Now he was in the first team. Bang! He was all over Twitter like a Kardashian. Bang! He was playing for Republic of Ireland. Highlights from the Republic of Ireland’s Group D World Cup qualifier against Moldova In Moldova of all places he might finally have put his baggage down and announced that he is here to stay. His two goals put Ireland in a very strong position to qualify and if the team gets to Russia in 2018, I believe James will be a leader and a key player.Seeing him score a couple of goals told us a lot about not just his talent, but that potential for leadership. It also gave me a lot of pleasure. Not just because of the kind of person James is, but because a lot of people put a lot of faith in him along the way and more often than not he has repaid them well. James McClean now plays for West Brom under Tony Pulis The leaps of faith started with Bryan Pop Robson, a goalscoring hero of the north east. Pop left his scouting job at Chelsea, wanting to get back up to his family and his roots in Hexham. Steve Bruce and I gave him the job as chief scout.Pop came in on the first day and said, Listen, there is a bargain out there that we were recommended to come and watch when I was at Chelsea. It was a lad called James McClean at Derry City. Given the structure at Chelsea and James age, Chelsea had decided not to pursue the transfer. There were a few other clubs looking at James that summer including Everton. Steve Bruce and I had never heard of James McClean, let alone seen him play, but it was Pop Robsons first day on the job, he was enthusiastic and it didnt seem like the time to knock him back. I agreed to approach Sunderlands owner Ellis Short to get permission to make the signing. Republic of Ireland manager Martin ONeill claims he is happy with the performance of his side as they beat Moldova 3-1 Ellis asked a number of pertinent questions, starting with, How many times have you seen him play, Niall? I answered truthfully. Zero times. What else did I know? Well, from what I knew of the League of Ireland and the list of players on our radar at the time, McClean wasnt near to being on the list but…Between the jigs and the reels Ellis agreed and we spoke to Derry. By the way, Pop also told us to sign a certain guy named Michu on that first day. Swansea fans will not be alone in remembering the 20-goal debut season that followed, but Steve and I chose James. He was playing under the management of Stephen Kenny at Derry and as so many players do under Stephens guidance, he had made quick progress. Watch NOW TV Watch Sky Sports for just £6.99. No contract. We held negotiations in Castleknock, Dublin when I was back home to see the All Ireland GGaelic football semi-final in 2011.dddddddddddd#160;James agent, Eamonn McLoughlin, was always a very likeable guy as agents go, easy to deal with. All through the deal there was one burning issue that Eamonn pushed for. He wanted me to call the FAI and tell them James wanted to switch from Northern Ireland to the Republic. We agreed a fee with further payments if James made the first team and another payment if James played for Ireland. Niall Quinn thinks James McClean will be key for Republic of Ireland if they qualify for the 2018 World Cup I spoke to John Delaney at the FAI. I explained how we at Sunderland felt this lad had a decent chance and asked JD to consider securing him for Giovanni Trapattoni. John showed great faith too by starting the paperwork and he also invited James parents to the next Irish game in Dublin. Meanwhile James had arrived in Sunderland. He was different. Everything was new to him but he wasnt fazed or overawed. He had a great desire to work on his game and to make it as a player. When he came we assumed it would take him a year or two to make the first team but he made his mark almost straight away, scoring in a 4-3 win for the development team against Newcastle United. Steve Bruce took note but he moved on not long after that and Martin ONeill, another Derry man, arrived.Martin first saw James play for the reserve team in the glamorous yet windswept surroundings of Eppleton Colliery Welfare FC in Durham. Our reserves beat Manchester United reserves 6-3. That was in mid-week. That very weekend James made his first-team debut, coming off the bench against Blackburn in Martins first game in charge, and he turned the game around. We came from behind for a win as many leaps of faith were well rewarded. It was as simple as just adding water. Instant folk hero. James McClean made his Sunderland league debut against Blackburn Its a funny thing but for all the controversies that have followed James since then, he seldom gets the credit for remaining true to who he is. The worry with a player who makes such rapid progress in the Premier League is that his head will be turned. The quiet lad you signed will be appearing in tabloids smoking a shisha pipe in some nightclub in Marbella at 4am with a pile of neer do well hangers-on who he didnt know two weeks previously. Not James. When I look at him playing now I still view him in those terms. Will he keep it on the rails? For instance, most young players who make the first team gradually work their way up to having a more respectable car in the players car park. James hadnt been long in the first team when I was gazing out the window of my office one day to see a massive, gleaming Range Rover-type thing pulling in and young James hopping out on the drivers side. Uh-oh?Martin ONeill spotted the vehicle too. You could probably have seen it from the moon and Martin had a quiet word. The car was back in the dealers showroom within a day or so. James McClean scored twice in Republic of Irelands win over Moldova Even in Moldova yesterday when James hit an awful free kick I found myself looking at him and thinking, Ah James, if youd spent less time getting yourself decorated with ink in tattoo parlours and more time practising free kicks that might have gone better for you. But thats just the old man in me tut-tutting for the sake of it.James is one of those characters who wobbles but always rights himself in the end. When Martin left Sunderland, James was gone not too long afterwards. He wasnt Paolo Di Canios cup of tea and maybe, vice-versa, Paolo wasnt too inspiring for James. Wigan came looking and he had no problem going there to continue working on his career and to get himself back into the Premier League. It was a sensible move and it worked out fine for him.James is 27 now. If you look at him objectively in a world where so many people are faking it, he is a young man whod rather wear his heart on his sleeve. He makes mistakes. After the game in Moldova for instance he had a crack at the Irish media.I would advise him just to respond to people either through what he does on the field or by talking to them one-on-one, but I understand his frustrations and I think hell learn. That has been his story so far, always learning, always arriving somewhere new. He was worth every leap of faith shown in him.Niall Quinn is chairman of Fleet Street Sports media group and writes for SportsVibe. Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Boston Celtics began life without Rajon Rondo on a high note. Kelly Olynyk scored 21 points off the bench to lead six Celtics in double figures in a 114-98 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night. Rondo was traded to Dallas along with Dwight Powell on Thursday night in exchange for guard Jameer Nelson, forwards Jae Crowder and Brandan Wright, two draft picks and cash considerations. Jeff Green supplied 18 points and seven rebounds, while Jared Sullinger, Tyler Zeller and Avery Bradley each scored 14 points in the Celtics third straight win. Sullinger pulled down 10 rebounds and Evan Turner contributed 10 points starting in place of Rondo, the All-Star point guard who ranks fourth on the Celtics all-time assists list. Shabazz Muhammad led all scorers with 26 points in the loss. The Timberwolves lost a fourth consecutive game overall and have now lost nine straight in Boston. Minnesota was also without one of its key players after Corey Brewer was traded to Houston in a three-team deal Friday. It was never close Friday as the Boston Red Sox got to Mark Buehrle early en route to an 8-1 win.DALLAS - Alex Chiasson needed a break, and he got one. The result was a game-winning, power-play goal. Chiasson snapped a third-period tie and lifted the Dallas Stars to a 3-2 victory on Monday night. Stars coach Lindy Ruff earned his 600th NHL win, and he got it against his former team. Ruffs first 571 wins came with Buffalo. "It means Im on my way to 700, hopefully," Ruff said. "It means that Ive had a lot of good players and good teams. Those wins belong to those players." Chiassons goal was his first in 13 games, and he wasnt the only player who broke a scoring drought. Alex Goligoski put Dallas ahead briefly 2-1 with his third goal this season after 48 games without one. "He has looked refreshed and energized," Ruff said of Chiasson. "He needed one to go in." Jordie Benn hadnt scored until he tied the game 1-1 in the second period with his first goal in 12 games. He knew what a victory would mean for Ruff. "Obviously, its huge to get that win for him," he said. "Hes a very decorated guy, a great guy and a great coach." The Stars opened a two-point lead over their closest pursuers for eighth place in the Western Conference. Dallas (29-22-10) has 68 points. Winnipeg and Vancouver both have 66. Tyler Ennis scored twice for Buffalo, with Matt Moulson assisting on both goals. The second got the Sabres even at 3:23 of the third. Ray Whitney had two assists for the Stars after moving during the game on to a line with Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin, Dallas two leading scorers. Chiasson, a rookie forward, was frustrated because Sabres goalie Jhonas Enroth stopped six of his team-high seven shots on goal. Then, at 10:25 of the third period, Chiasson skated in front of Enroth and deflected Jamie Benns slap shot from the blue line into the net for the winning goal. What Chiasson couldnt do with his stick, he accomplished with his leg. "Sometimes youre going to need help from other people, but we need Jamie," he said. "Look at the first goal, Jamie was right there (screening Enroth). And then on the last one, his shot hit me in the shin guard." Enroth complained, but the goal stood. "Something happened there you couldnt really see on the replay," the goalie said, "but the ref told me it was (teammate Mike) Weber that kind of got his stick in my glove or whatever happened there." Chiasson said that the Stars 19-day Olympics break helped him. "I went through a phase where I couldnt see the light out of the tunnel," he said. "It seems like the break came at the right time..ddddddddddddI put some weight back on, and I felt rested." Enroth made 36 saves, and Dallas Kari Lehtonen had 21. "The first couple periods, I didnt think we were in the game at all. If it wasnt for Jhonas, I dont think that the score would have been as close as it was," Sabres coach Ted Nolan said. "I thought in the third period we played a bit better. We took a bad penalty, again. They capitalized, and that was the difference." Dallas dominated the first period everywhere but on the scoreboard as the Sabres took a 1-0 lead. The Stars recorded 14 of the first 17 shots, but failed to score on three power plays despite putting seven shots on goal. Dallas nearly gave up a short-handed goal on the third advantage, but Matt DAgostinis shot hit the crossbar. The Sabres scored on their next shot. Drew Stafford skated in on the left side, and when Dallas Trevor Daley slid on the ice to try to block a shot, Stafford passed the puck across to Ennis, who scored at 17:17. Dallas outshot the Sabres 16-5 in the period, which ended with Enroth stopping Chiassons close-range backhand. Chiasson put a team-high four shots on goal in the first, including some of the Stars best chances. Enroth had stopped Chiassons slap shot on Dallas first power play, as well as two slap shots by Cody Eakin. The Stars tied it 1:30 into the second period when Jordie Benn sent a slap shot from the left point past his brother Jamies screen, and past Enroth. Six seconds before the period ended, Gologoski scored. Ryan Garbutt deflected Trevor Daleys slap shot off the post. Shawn Horcoff gathered in the rebound and sent a backhanded pass across the goalmouth to Goligoski, who scored into the left side of the net. The Stars had a 12-9 advantage in shots, for a two-period total of 28-14. Buffalo tied it when Moulsons shot went over the net but bounced back off the glass to Ennis, who tucked the puck into the lower right corner. The loss ended a season-best three-game winning streak for Buffalo (18-35-8). NOTES: The Stars were 1 for 26 on power plays in their previous seven games. ... Eakin left the game with 3 minutes remaining, but Ruff said there was no serious injury. ... Jamie Benn has six goals, nine assists in his last 11 games. ... Enroth has stopped 101 of 110 shots in his last three games. ... In his last four games against Dallas, Moulson has six goals, two assists. ... Buffalo was penalized six times; the Stars only once. "I just think it was typical last-place calls to a playoff-team calls, and thats just the way life works once in a while," Nolan said. ' ' '

on rule enforcements or some memorable
Yazar: Dogcat250 - 4 saat önce - Forum: Forum hakkında - Yorum Yok

Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Kerry, As many have mentioned, Dan Carcillo can get three, 10 or 20 games for hitting linesman Scott Driscoll on Thursday night. Why such a range of suspendable games in the NHL rule book? Also, have you ever been hit by a player like Driscoll was last night? Or did someone come close? Jason,Markham, ON Jason: Its unacceptable and intolerable for a player, under any circumstance, to deliberately apply physical force in any manner against an official! Daniel Carcillo subjected himself to an automatic suspension under rule 40 when he crossed the line and clipped linesman Scott Driscoll with his elbow. Rule 40 is very specific and unique in that it provides authority for the referee (officials) to impose a player suspension; including a varied range of game numbers. The history of this rule is also unique and was implemented following a hard line taken by the NHLOA in 1982, when players that physically abused an official were given a mere slap on the wrist by the League. This is how it all transpired and as I documented in my book, The Final Call. In my second year in the league, there was more than a growing concern that player violence and disrespect against on-ice officials had escalated beyond anything that could be tolerated by the members of the NHLOA. Referee Andy Van Hellemond was the most high-profile target of player abuse, having been crosschecked in the back by Barclay Plager of the St. Louis Blues and then punched in the chest by Paul Holmgren of the Flyers. Van Hellemond, along with Dave Newell, president of the NHLOA, and legal counsel Jim Beatty, pulled NHL president John Ziegler away from the annual office Christmas party in Montreal on Dec. 23, 1981 in an attempt to convey how serious our concerns were. It was felt that if stronger suspensions were imposed, players would refrain from what had been taking place. The league seemed to prefer the status quo. Beatty then wrote a letter to the NHL, which he released to the media, advising that, because the officials feared that their safety was not being adequately provided for (as the league was obligated to do under the CBA) we would begin "working to rule." The letter clarified what that meant: if a fight broke out, the referee and two linesmen would retreat to the safety of the officials crease by the penalty box. When the combatants had finished fighting, they were to make their way to the penalty box and take their respective seats, at which time the referee would assess the appropriate penalties. This "work to rule" lasted one weekend only and quickly got the attention of the league. In my game in Winnipeg that weekend, Jets tough guy Bryan Maxwell fought an opponent behind the net under the big picture of the Queen. I blew my whistle and the linesmen and I went to the officials crease and waited. The punches eventually slow as the players looked for the officials to step in. When that didnt happen, they stopped fighting, picked up their gloves and sticks, and, obeying the commands of my waving arm, took their places in the penalty box for five minutes. By the time the weekend was over, the NHL agreed to act, and, to the satisfaction of the NHLOA, a "blue-ribbon committee" was created to discuss and implement changes. The panel consisted of general managers, coaches, referees, NHL executives and NHLPA Executive Director Alan Eagleson. The group was given the task of fashioning a rule change to take effect, subject to the board of governors approval, at the beginning of the 1982-83 season. Before the current season finished and the panel got to craft a new rule, Van Hellemond was punched again. This time, Terry OReilly hit him with a wicked right cross to the side of the head during a playoff game against the Quebec Nordiques on April 25 (OReilly was suspended for the first 10 games of the next season and fined $500). After its deliberations, the blue-ribbon committee put forward a tough policy known as Rule 67. This rule called for an automatic 20-game suspension for any player who, "deliberately strikes, or who deliberately applies physical force in any manner against an official." It also specified an automatic three-game suspension for any player who "physically demeans" an official or who "deliberately applies physical force" to an official while being restrained during a fight with an opposing player. In both of these cases, the penalty and automatic suspension were to be imposed by the referee immediately after the game, and the player had no right of appeal! Conventional wisdom at the time was that due to the severity of the consequences there would never be another case of physical abuse against an official. That was until the night before Halloween 1983 when Tom Lysiak was playing for Chicago against Harford and he was ejected from a faceoff by linesman Ron Foyt. After the puck was dropped Lysiak skated through the faceoff circle and deliberately tripped Foyt from behind. The referee in the game, Dave Newell, suspended Lysiak for 20 games. All hell broke loose. Lysiak went to court and got a temporary injunction. Ultimately, the suspension stuck. Unfortunately, Ron Foyt was terminated at the end of the following season, in what many of us considered a case of retribution over the Lysiak affair. The rule evolved into what we now know as rule 40 to differentiate between varying degrees of physical abuse applied toward an official (There was wide gap between 20 and three games). Following the Lysiak court injunction, an appeal process was also added to provide the player with his "day in court." In this case, if Daniel Carcillo is suspended under rule 40 by the officials working the game Thursday night in NY, the League will hold a conference call with the NHLPA to review the Referees application of this rule, and will refrain from issuing public comment affirming the Referees application of Rule 40 until that call is complete. The player (or the officials) may request the Commissioner to review, subject to the provisions of this rule, the penalty imposed by the Referees (Must be filed in writing within 72 hours following notification of the penalty). A hearing will be conducted by the Commissioner on an expedited basis before the second game missed by the player due to the automatic suspension. For Category lll offenses only, the Commissioner may conduct the hearing by telephone. For Category I and ll offenses, the hearing shall be conducted in person. After any review, the Commissioner shall issue an order that: (i) sustaining the minimum suspension, or (ii) increasing the number of games within the category, or (iii) changing to a lower category, or (iv) changing to a lower category and increasing the number of games within this category, or (v) in the case of a Category lll suspension only, reducing the number of games of the suspension. Note rule 40.6 provides that in the event that the player has committed more than one offense under this rule, in addition to the penalties already imposed under this offense, his case shall be referred to the Commissioner of the League for consideration of supplementary disciplinary action. This would be Daniel Carcillos second violation of physical abuse of an official and while that would not have been taken into account by the officials last night, Commissioner Gary Bettman should already have this case moved to his desk.   recommendation of his Argentina team-mat
Yazar: Dogcat250 - 4 saat önce - Forum: Forum hakkında - Yorum Yok

Swansea defender Federico Fernandez says the recommendation of his Argentina team-mate Lionel Messi will count for nothing when Pep Guardiola takes over at Manchester City. Fernandez comes up against City on the final day of the Premier League season, live on Sky Sports, aiming to put a real dampener on Guardiolas arrival in Manchester this summer.City need a point at the Liberty Stadium to secure fourth spot and the Champions League place that comes with it, with defeat in Manuel Pellegrinis farewell fixture leaving them at risk of being usurped by Manchester United. Whatever happens on Sunday, though, Fernandez feels Guardiola has accepted the toughest challenge of a career which has so far only known success at Barcelona and Bayern Munich. Pep Guardiola is doused in beer by David Alaba as Bayern celebrate their title success All the players I know who have worked with him have always said what a good coach he is, said Fernandez. He has been successful wherever he has been, and Lionel spoke highly of what he did in Barcelona. But the Premier League is different. This is a more competitive league, a tougher competition. Each team is capable of beating the others every week as we have seen this season.Manchester City have top players but you only have to look at Chelsea this year to see how tough it is. They have top players and were champions, but this year they are only just around the top 10.So I think Guardiola has a tough job ahead at Manchester City.Swansea are without key players on Sunday who are rested ahead of Euro 2016 next month, including skipper Ashley Williams and joint-top scorer Gylfi Sigurdsson. Francesco Guidolin can now show just how good he is, says Fernandez But they have won six of their last 10 games, and manager Francesco Guidolin signed a new two-year contract in midweek. He came in when the situation was not good and very stressful, and I am happy for him and his staff, Fernandez said about Guidolin. He now gets a clean slate and a different chance to show how good he is. PAUL, Minn. -- The Minnesota Wild traded for goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov on Tuesday in conjunction with their decision to shut down ailing veteran Niklas Backstrom. The Wild sent a fourth-round draft pick to Edmonton to complete the deal one day before the NHL trade deadline. General manager Chuck Fletcher said the team must assume that neither Backstrom nor Josh Harding will be healthy enough to mind the net again this season. Rookie Darcy Kuemper has been stellar in their absence, but with a finishing stretch of 20 games in 37 days starting Saturday, hes not enough. "We have a lot of work ahead of us to get where we want to get to, but clearly having two quality goaltenders was very important," Fletcher said. Kuemper has started 15 straight games, so Bryzgalov is more for insurance, though hes certain to have his time, too. The Wild are 14-4-2 in 2014 and in firm control of the first wild-card spot in the Western Conference playoff race. "I will do my job as best I can. Making the decisions on who is supposed to play is not my job," Bryzgalov said on a conference call. He added: "I look at this as a great opportunity for me to play, and yeah its like a new challenge." Backstrom has been bothered by injuries all season, most notably to his midsection that will probably prompt surgery, and the 36-year-old has a career-worst 3.02 goals-against average over 21 games. Fletcher told him Monday of their preference to hold him out until training camp. "His pain threshold is tremendous," Fletcher said. "Hes a competitive guy and I know hes really disappointed because the team has taken a really strong step the last couple months. Hes been through some of the lean times, and I know he wants to be a part of it but our goal for Nik is to get him healthy." Harding was superb early in the season, but the 2013 Masterton Trophy winner -- for sportsmanship, dedication and perseverance -- has not played at all in 2014 due to illness related to medication for multiple sclerosis. With not much more than a month left in the regular season and Harding not yet ready to resume skating, Fletcher said hes probably finished until the ffall, too.dddddddddddd The search for a replacement intensified in the last couple of days. Martin Brodeur and Jaroslav Halak also were potentially available via trade, but their price was far higher than what it took to nab Bryzgalov. The 33-year-old Russian has a 5-8-5 record in 20 games for the Oilers this season, with an ugly 3.01 goals-against average. Hes on an expiring contract, a requirement for the Wild. This is a rental, plain and simple. Thats largely because Kuemper has tied a Wild rookie record with 11 wins and since Jan. 7 has a 1.70 GAA with two shutouts and a .939 save percentage. "Weve always felt hed be a very good No. 1 goalie down the road, and we just didnt realize down the road would mean this January and February," Fletcher said. The pick sent to Edmonton was originally acquired last year from Buffalo in the trade that brought first-line right wing Jason Pominville to Minnesota. Bryzgalov has 38 games of playoff experience over five postseasons with Anaheim, Phoenix and Philadelphia, including three stellar starts against the Wild in the Western Conference quarterfinals in 2007. He stopped 73 of 77 shots in the first three games of that series, all Ducks victories. Bryzgalov struggled in defeat in the next game, Jean-Sebastien Giguere replaced him thereafter and the Ducks went on to win the Stanley Cup. Bryzgalovs career record is 213-157-50, including a 42-20-6 mark for the Coyotes during the 2009-10 season, his best in the NHL. He had a 2.29 goals-against average and a .920 save percentage. Then came his ill-fated time in Philadelphia. The Flyers signed him to a $51 million, nine-year contract in 2011 and used a salary-cap compliance buyout to release him last June, just two seasons into the megadeal. General manager Paul Holmgren said then the contract was "a costly mistake." Bryzgalov didnt sign with the Oilers until last November. After signing goalie Ben Scrivens to a two-year contract extension last week, the Oilers took their first step away from Bryzgalov. Then they acquired goalie Viktor Fasth from Anaheim on Tuesday for a fifth-round draft pick this summer and a third-round selection in 2015. ' ' '

The all-red outfits they donned for the first time Sunday drove home the point. Playing nearly mistake-free for the second straight week, Smith threw for 223 yards and two touchdowns against the ball-hawking Dallas Cowboys, and the Chiefs defence held when it needed to in the fourth quarter to preserve a 17-16 victory. "When youre trying to build something, you need to win games like this," said Smith, who also had a game-high 57 yards rushing. "These are the games you look at in November and December. You need these types of wins, not only the calibre of the win but the style of win. "Its not always going to be pretty," he said, "but you have to find a way to bear down." The Chiefs did that marvelously in the fourth quarter. Dwayne Bowes go-ahead touchdown catch and Ryan Succops field goal had staked them to a 17-13 lead, but the Cowboys were on the move in the closing minutes. After Tony Romo threw three straight incompletions, though, Dan Bailey had to kick a 53-yard field goal. The Chiefs regained possession with 3:55 left. Jamaal Charles helped them grind out a couple first downs, and a pass interference call on Morris Claiborne on third-and-10 gave Kansas City another set of downs. That kept Romo from having any time to orchestrate some late-game magic. "We ask a lot of certain players on this team and they showed up," Chiefs cornerback Brandon Flowers said. "We did a great job of holding them down." Romo, who was playing with bruised ribs, finished 30 of 42 for 298 yards. His favourite target was Dez Bryant, who had nine catches for 141 yards and the Cowboys only touchdown. "You got to realize, you cant forget all the work that you put in to go out and be a good football team," Bryant said. The Cowboys (1-1) forced the New York Giants into six turnovers in their opener, but couldnt turn the same trick against Kansas City. After preaching ball security all week, the Chiefs got through their second straight game witthout throwing an interception or losing a fumble.dddddddddddd "Takeaways and points, man, on both sides of the ball. We try to eliminate the turnovers and we try to score points," Reid said. "Its as simple as that." The Chiefs, coming off an uplifting win at Jacksonville, were amped for his first game as their coach at Arrowhead Stadium. A capacity crowd roared when they rolled onto the field in all-red uniforms, departing from traditional white pants to signify the start of a new era. They kept on rolling, too. Kansas City marched 77 yards on the opening series, the highlight coming when Smith scrambled 17 yards on third-and-15 and executed a Fosbury Flop over a defender for a first down. Smith capped the drive with a short TD toss to Charles. Thats when the Romo-to-Bryant connection got on track. Bryant outwrestled cornerback Brandon Flowers for a 53-yard catch that helped set up Baileys first field goal. He then hauled in a short TD catch to give Dallas a 10-7 lead. The Cowboys blocked Ryan Succops 57-yard try to carry their lead into halftime, and then Bryant caught three more passes to set up another field goal in the third quarter. But the Chiefs answered when Smith hit Bowe on a 12-yard slant for a 14-13 lead later in the quarter. Dallas fumbled on its next two possessions -- Lance Dunbar coughed it up first and then Romo was strip-sacked by Ron Parker. But its defence stiffened each time, first forcing a field goal and then getting a sack from Bruce Carter to push the Chiefs out of Succops range. The Cowboys marched deep into Chiefs territory one last time, but again couldnt find the end zone. And when Romo got the ball back, there was hardly any time left. "We had a good plan and did some things that gave us a chance to win this football game. We put ourselves in position, but we didnt," Romo said. "Ultimately, thats all that matters." Notes: Cowboys TE Jason Witten had three catches to pass Shannon Sharpe for second-most among tight ends. Witten has 817 in his career. ... Chiefs LT Branden Albert hurt his left shoulder but returned to the game. ... Cowboys DE DeMarcus Ware and Chiefs DT Dontari Poe each had two sacks. ' ' '
